Report: Spurs overtake Arsenal in race transfer race; willing to trigger £31m transfer release clause

Tottenham have been linked with Sampdoria’s central defender Joachim Andersen and are reportedly the only club willing to pay £31m fee for the 23-year-old.

The report comes from TuttoMercatoWeb and claims that there is a number of European sides who are interested in the Danish player, including Spurs’ fierce rivals Arsenal.

Andersen himself has admitted that his agent is holding talks with the interested parties and he will soon make a decision on where his future lies.

The Danish international has impressed with his performances for Sampdoria this season, having made 34 appearances in all competitions for his side.

And, with Toby Alderweireld possibly on his way out of north London, Andersen could be a decent replacement of the Belgian for Mauricio Pochettino.

The Spurs boss will also be happy to hear that Arsenal, who were thought to be close on securing Andersen’s signature along with the centre-back’s teammate Dennis Praet, will very likely be unable to match Sampdoria’s release clause of £31m for the Dane.

The Gunners failed to secure a Champions League spot for a third year in the row and as a result have a much smaller transfer budget of just £40m to spend this summer.

The Lilywhites, however, are very unlikely to make an official offer for the 23-year-old, who has one year left on his contract at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, until Toby Alderweireld’s future is resolved.
