Report: Spurs place Aston Villa man at top of wish list if first-team star leaves

Tottenham have set their sights on Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as an option to replace Hugo Lloris if the Frenchman does not sign a new contract at the club, according to the Independent.

Lloris, 34, sees his deal at Tottenham expire at the end of the season and is at risk of seeing a stint in North London lasting over nine years come to an end.

He has long-established himself as the club’s number-one option between the sticks since joining from Lyon in 2012, and Spurs now have a decision to make regarding his future.

However, the Independent claim that if Lloris does not sign an extension, Spurs could move for Villa and former Arsenal man Martinez, whose rise up the football ladder in recent seasons has been impressive, to say the least.

The Argentina international joined the Villans last year and has firmly established himself as one of the focal points in Dean Smith’s side.

However, while the report claims Martinez heads a list of targets set by Spurs, it adds that a deal could be ‘difficult to negotiate’, meaning there are also other options being considered.

Alongside a retained interest in West Brom stopper Sam Johnstone, Real Sociedad’s Alex Romero and Alex Meret of Napoli also find themselves on the list of replacements Spurs could turn to.

As time goes by, we are getting closer to the conclusion of Lloris’ contract at the club. He has been an immense servant of Spurs and it would be a shame if he were to leave for free, but it is also good that the club is assessing its options if he decides not to extend.
