Report: Spurs planned to bid for 22-year-old if Kane joined Man City last summer

The Telegraph have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur planned to make an offer for Dusan Vlahovic last summer had Harry Kane joined Manchester City.

City were heavily linked with a big-money move for Kane all the way through last summer’s transfer window (Independent) but the Premier League champions were unable to prise the striker away from Tottenham.

Pep Guardiola admitted this week that City never came close to signing the Tottenham man, with the North London club making it clear the striker was not for sale (Sky Sports).

Reports over recent days have indicated that while Kane is now more open to signing a new contract with Spurs, the England captain wants assurances that the club would back Antonio Conte in the summer transfer window (The Sun).

The Telegraph have now asserted that Tottenham were planning on making an offer for Vlahovic last summer if City had met their valuation for Kane.

The Serbian international joined Juventus from Fiorentina in a deal worth £62m last month (Goal.com) but the Telegraph claim that Spurs would have had to pay a fee in the region of £80m to land the 22-year-old last summer.

However, it is explained that City did not come close to meeting Tottenham’s £120m valuation of Kane last summer, with the Premier League champions only making an offer of £75m plus another £25m in add-ons.

Given that we also reportedly made a big offer for Lautaro Martinez last summer (Football.London), I suspect Paratici’s plans would have been to bring in both Vlahovic and the Argentine had City met our asking price for Kane.

However, Spurs were certainly not going to sell Kane for the kind of offer City reportedly made. Tottenham would still be able to get £80m- £100m for the England captain this summer if he decides not to extend his contract at Spurs.

So, there was no way Daniel Levy was going to settle for such a fee last summer when the striker still had three years left on his contract.
