Jose Mourinho’s decision to continually chop and change his central defensive pairing saw the Portuguese come in for criticism last season.
Individual errors at the heart of the Tottenham defence led to Mourinho frequently alternating between Toby Alderweired, Eric Dier, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez.
Rodon, who arrived from Swansea City late on in the summer transfer window found himself cup tied in the Carabao Cup and left out of the 25-man squad for the Europa League.
The Welshman did not play more than four Premier League games in succession last season, with the last run of matches coming before Mourinho was dismissed and only played a single minute of top flight football under interim head coach Ryan Mason (transfermarkt).
While some of Tottenham’s players are due to report back for pre-season training next week, Rodon, who has been on international duty with Wales at Euro 2020 is not scheduled to return to Hotspur Way until the penulimate week of this month.
Football.London claim that the 23-year-old could decide to return to training earlier than planned to give himself the opportunity of working under new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
It is refreshing to hear of the desire of a player to look to return to the club to stake his claim for a place under Nuno, rather than jetting off to somewhere hot while other players are starting to familiarise themselves with their new head coach.
With reports suggesting that Toby Alderweireld could be on his way out this summer, Rodon has the opportunity to step up and become a regular fixture in the heart of our defence.
