Report: Spurs player is now unlikely to join London club this summer

The Athletic has revealed that even though Sergio Reguilon has impressed everyone at Brentford since joining the club on loan in January, he is unlikely to sign for the club permanently this summer.

The report points out that Brentford do not have an option to buy Reguilon and would thus have to enter into negotiations with Spurs this summer if they wish to sign the left-back.

It is revealed that Brentford head coach Thomas Frank, director of football Phil Giles and technical director Lee Dykes held a meeting in the first week of April to sketch out their transfer plans for the summer.

In the meeting, the trio felt that the on-loan Spurs man has done well enough for them to consider signing him permanently.

However, the 27-year-old’s salary makes the deal very difficult for the West London club as he earns £100,000 a week at Spurs, which is almost double that of Brentford’s top earners.

In addition, it is pointed out that Tottenham would want to recoup a significant portion of the £27.5m fee they paid to sign him from Real Madrid in 2020.

With Rico Henry expected to be fit for the start of the season, the outlet adds that the Bees would not want to spend a big transfer fee on a backup left-back.

Even though Brentford might not be willing to sign Reguilon, the Spaniard has proven his fitness and showcased his quality at the Gtech Community Stadium over the last few months. There will not be any shortage of interest in his services this summer.
