Report: Spurs player wanted to stay and fight for his place under Postecoglou

Alasdair Gold has revealed that it was Daniel Levy who called Eric Dier in for a meeting in an apparent effort to move him on before the summer transfer window shut.

Ange Postecoglou has clearly signalled to Dier that he is not part of his plans by omitting the centre-back from every single one of Tottenham’s matchday squads so far this season.

In fact, even 18-year-old summer signing, Ashley Phillips, was named on the bench ahead of the England international for the Lilywhites’ trip to Turf Moor for the last match.

The Telegraph revealed last week that Dier held a meeting with chairman Levy after being overlooked by Postecoglou. The report explained that while the details of the pair’s conversation were kept private, it was likely to do with the 29-year-old’s status in the squad and his future.

Football Insider even claimed a couple of days ago that Spurs have already decided to offload Dier in January and replace him with Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo.

Eric Dier wants to fight for his place at Tottenham

Gold has now shed more light on the meeting that the experienced Tottenham star had with the club chairman.

The journalist said on a Q&A on Football.London: “From what I understand it was Eric Dier who was called in for a meeting with Daniel Levy. Presumably, it was in an effort to move him on before the windows closed.

“Dier wants to fight for his place under Postecoglou but would have accepted a loan move had one arrived for him in order to get game time – reports suggesting a Burnley loan offer arrived were dismissed by the club at the time.”

I suspect that the reason Dier wants to run his contract down is that he wants to move abroad next summer, and rightly believes that he will have a lot more options to choose from if he is a free agent.

That is probably why the 29-year-old was in favour of a loan move this summer rather than a permanent one.
