Report: Spurs player’s agent has met with Barcelona president ahead of January window

The agent of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has met with Barcelona president Joan Laporta, with a view to securing a move to the Catalan club in January, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Hojbjerg has gone from being a first team regular and key member of the Spurs squad under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, to becoming a peripheral figure under new boss Ange Postecoglou who has instead preferred the partnership of Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr.

Thanks to injuries and suspensions, Hojbjerg’s game time has increased of late, but he still has less than 600 minutes on the field in the Premier League this season (Transfermarkt). By this stage last season, the Danish midfielder had racked up 1,335 minutes (Transfermarkt).

It has been a steep drop-off for the 28-year-old, and one which has prompted much speculation over his future in North London.

According to La Stampa, Hojbjerg himself is keen to move on, with Juventus thought to be interested in securing his services. However, there is thought to be reluctance on Tottenham‘s behalf to let him go given their current situation.

Could Hojbjerg be in line for Barcelona move?

The latest from Mundo Deportivo, however, suggests Barcelona are making moves to sign Hojbjerg in January, with meetings believed to have taken place already.

Apparently, renowned agent, Pini Zahavi, has met with Barca president Joan Laporta recently and it is believed Hojbjerg may have been “one of the topics” of discussion.

Zahavi is known to have a “great relationship” with Laporta and, given the La Liga side’s need for a new central midfielder, it is expected Zahavi may have been touting his client, Hojbjerg, to fulfil that need.

Spurs Web Opinion

I will be sad to see Hojbjerg go if it happens, as he’s been a great servant to this club. However, from watching in recent weeks, I think it’s clear that he isn’t quite the player Postecoglou wants for this style of play, as he is far too conservative.

We need to replace him before we let him go, however with midfield options currently short due to Sarr and Bissouma’s involvement in AFCON and Rodrigo Bentancur currently injured.
