Report: Spurs prepared to sell midfielder if new deal cannot be reached

Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to offload Eric Dier in the summer if the midfielder does not sign a new deal with the club.

A report by Football Insider suggests that the club are ready to offer the 26-year-old a new contract with his current deal runs out in eighteen months.

It is claimed however that Dier will not be offered a significant pay rise by the Champions League finalists.

According to the report, if the England international refuses to sign, Spurs will offload him in the summer as they are unwilling to allow Dier to enter the last twelve months of his contract.

Spurs have already been stung with players running down their contracts after Christian Eriksen was recently sold for just £16.9million to Inter Milan with just six months left on his current deal (BBC).

The former Sporting Libson product is rated highly by Jose Mourinho, who has reportedly coveted him since his days at Manchester United (Daily Mail).

While Dier featured regularly in the first few games under Mourinho, he has recently seen himself used more sparingly by the Spurs head coach.

The midfielder has failed to get back to the level he was at a couple of years ago since recovering from a combination of injuries and illness last season.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Dier’s recent form has been poor, that rustiness is to be expected given how long he has been out. I thought he looked much tidier with his passing against Southampton. The versatility the 26-year-old offers makes him a great squad option to have. However, we don’t want a repeat of the Eriksen situation and so it might be prudent to sell if we can’t agree on an extension.
