Report: Spurs ready to battle Arsenal for 22-year-old midfielder

The Daily Mirror have reported that Tottenham Hotspur are ready to battle Arsenal for the signature of Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar this summer.

Aouar has gone from strength to strength since making his Ligue 1 debut as a teenager back in 2017.

The versatile attacking midfielder, who scored eight times and provided four assists last season, found himself missing out on the France squad for this summer’s European Championships but the 22-year-old is expected to be a star for Les Blues in the future.

The Mirror now claim that Arsenal have held a long-term interest in Aouar, having tried in vain to sign him last summer.

It is explained that the Gunners will now make another effort to sign the Lyon attacker this summer but they could face competition from Tottenham.

Tottenham’s new managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, is said to have identified the French international as the man to add creativity to the Spurs midfield.

The report asserts that Lyon are ready to cash in on Aouar as they need to raise funds to cope with the financial fallout of the pandemic.

Aouar’s price is not likely to be as high as it was 12 months ago as he did not have a particularly good season last time out and he now has only 2 years left on his contract. So, there is potentially a bargain to be had with the 22-year-old this summer, especially given Lyon’s need to raise funds.
