Report: Spurs ready to spend big on position; two players on the radar

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign a left sided central defender in the January transfer window.

Sky Sports football reporter Paul Gilmour claims that the Champions League finalists will only make a move if one of the current squad departs first.

Jan Vertonghen, who has been a mainstay as the club’s left-footed centre-half over the past few seasons has found himself operating primarily as a left-back under Jose Mourinho.

Vertonghen, 32, has just six months left to run on his existing contract in North London and can begin negotiations with any European clubs from next month when the transfer window reopens.

The report claims that Spurs are ready to spend big on bolstering the position with West Ham United’s Issa Diop and Nathan Ake of Bournemouth are both said to be on the club’s radar.

Mourinho was critical of his defence following the 2-2 draw at Norwich City where both goals which the Canaries conceded came from Spurs mistakes (Guardian).
