Report: Spurs rebuffed loan offers for youngster who has impressed Mourinho in training

Some Spurs fans may have been left scratching their heads when Tottenham’s Europa League squad for the group stages was released earlier this week.

While the likes of Paulo Gazzaniga, Danny Rose and Gedson Fernandes all missed out on the squad, Spurs did find a place for Jack Clarke on the list.

The youngster has not been with the club long enough to qualify for the B list and has thus taken one of the “association trained” spots in the squad.

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has now shed light on why the teenager has been picked, revealing that Jose Mourinho has been impressed with what he has seen from Clarke.

He claims that Clarke, who was involved heavily in Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies, continues to impress the Spurs boss with his ability and his high fitness levels in training.

Mourinho is said to believe that the winger can develop his game while training with world-class talents like Gareth Bale.

Gold also revealed that Spurs have rebuffed offers from Championship clubs to sign the former Leeds man on loan, and the club are expected to make a decision on the 19-year-old’s future before the domestic window shuts on October 16.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is unlikely Clarke would have been named in the Europa League squad if the club were planning on loaning him out. So, it looks like he is going to stay at least until January. While I can understand the idea behind helping him develop by training with the first-team, in reality, he is not going to get any minutes even in the Europa League for us, with the options we now have in the wide areas.
