Report: Spurs receive potential blow in pursuit of right-back Djed Spence

In a potential blow to Tottenham’s rumoured hopes of signing Djed Spence, Teesside Live have revealed that Middlesbrough have taken up their option to extend the right-back’s contract by an additional year.

Spence’s performances on loan at Nottingham Forest have seemingly caught the eye of Spurs. Antonio Conte’s men reportedly saw a £12m offer knocked back by Boro towards the end of the January transfer window (90 min).

Alasdair Gold revealed in his latest YouTube video (1:01:53) that Tottenham’s managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, was expected to be in attendance at the City Ground to run the rule over Spence in Forests’ FA Cup clash against Leicester.

Teeside Live have now also confirmed that representatives from Spurs were in attendance to watch Spence score in Forest’s 4-1 win over the Foxes.

However, it is revealed that Boro have triggered an option to extend Spence’s contract by an additional year in order to avoid losing him for a cut-price fee in the summer.

This means that the 21-year-old’s contract at the Riverside Stadium now runs until 2024 instead of 2023.

Teeside Live further add that Forest hope to keep Spence at the club beyond the end of this season but it is suggested that Steve Cooper’s side would have to win promotion to the Premier League to achieve that.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even with Spence’s contract running until 2024, the youngster would likely still be cheaper in the summer than other options like Tariq Lamptey.

However, I would prefer Spurs to pay a little extra to land the Brighton man as I believe he would have an instant impact at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
