Report: Spurs rekindle interest in midfielder who has been on their radar for over two years

According to reports from Colombia, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to make an approach for Wilmar Barrios, who has been on the club’s radar for more than two years.

Spurs were said to be readying a £25m offer sign the midfielder from Boca in the summer of 2018, with journalist Luis Fregossi even claiming at one point that the deal to take him to North London had been agreed.

However, the move did not materialise and the Colombian international ended up sealing a move to Zenit St Petersburg in 2019.

The 27-year-old has gone from strength to strength since his move to Russia and has become a key player for Sergei Semak’s side.

According to a report from Primer Tiempo, Spurs have now once again rekindled their interest in Barrios, having enquired about his availability to Zenit.

The midfielder is said to be keen on playing in one of Europe’s top leagues, with the report revealing that AC Milan, Newcastle and Besiktas are also interested in his services.

Spurs could be eyeing Barrios as a long-term replacement for Moussa Sissoko. Even Mourinho is indeed going to continue employing a double-pivot, one can argue that the Colombian would be a better fit for the team than Winks would be.
