Report: Spurs remain interested in goalkeeper valued at £17m

Takvim report (as relayed by Sport Witness) that Tottenham remain interested in Ugurcan Cakir ahead of the summer transfer window.

Cakir’s reputation has grown considerably over the last few years owing to his consistent displays in between the sticks for Trabzonspor and he heads into this summer’s European Championship as Turkey’s number one.

The 25-year-old is rumoured to be a long-term target for Tottenham, being linked with a move to the North Londoners as far back as 2019.

Fotospor claimed in April that Spurs were one of several European sides who were tracking the goalkeeper. Takvim have now backed up that claim, naming Tottenham and Serie A title winners Inter Milan as the two sides who are after Cakir.

It is explained that Trabzonspor are in no hurry to sell their number one and are prepared to wait until after the Euros. The Turkish club will reportedly not consider offers below €20m (£17m) for Cakir this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

If we are interested in Cakir, it is unclear whether the club are looking at him as a replacement for Hugo Lloris or as potential competition for the Frenchman, with a view to replacing him in the future.

I expect Lloris to stay and potentially sign a contract extension. However, just because I think the 34-year-old will still be our number one next season, does not mean we should not be looking for his long-term successor.

With Gazzaniza leaving, we need to sign a goalkeeper unless we want to head into next season with Whitemen as our number three.

The question is whether we will pick up a number two/three on the cheap or pay a sizable fee to sign a goalkeeper who could develop into our long-term number one.
