Report: Spurs remain locked in negotiations with star player over new contract

Multiple reports across the lockdown period have suggested that Jan Vertonghen is likely to leave Tottenham at the end of this season after spending eight years in North London.

The likes of Inter Milan, Roma, Valencia and Real Betis are all said to be interested in signing the centre-back (CalcioMercato).

However, a much more pressing question seems to be whether the centre-half will stay until the end of the season or leave when his contract officially runs out next month.

Football Insider reported this month that Tottenham were close to reaching an agreement with the Belgian international to stay till the end of the season.

However, ESPN claimed recently that Vertonghen could leave Spurs next month with no agreement in place as of yet.

Estadio Deportivo have now revealed that the North Londoners are still in negotiations with the experienced defender to get him to sign an extension until the end of the current campaign.

They claim that Jose Mourinho is keen for the 33-year-old to finish the season with Tottenham. However, they too back Vertonghen to leave at the end of the campaign and suggest that Real Betis have identified him as an option.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot see Vertonghen abruptly leaving next month when his contract runs out as that would be a rather sad way for him to end his time in North London. I believe that he will see out the season with us but it is clear at this point that he is unlikely to agree on an extension unless we offer him a two-year deal.
