Report: Spurs remain ‘very interested’ in wing-back after failed summer move

The print edition of Mundo Deportivo (05/11/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) have backed Tottenham to reignite their interest in Atletico Madrid wing-back Yannick Carrasco in January.

Carrasco was reportedly on Spurs’ radar during the summer, with The Telegraph claiming during the final week of the transfer window that the North London club had entered into talks with Atletico over a possible deal for the Belgian international.

Spurs were not able to get a deal for the 29-year-old over the line but if reports over recent weeks are to be believed, the North London club could have more luck in January.

AS reported last week that Atletico would be willing to cash in on Carrasco when the transfer window reopens as the La Liga giants have to raise funds to cover their losses.

This information has now been backed up by Mundo Deportivo, who state that Los Colchoneros need to cover a major hole in their finances after failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The report states that Carrasco is one of the players that Diego Simeone’s men would be willing to listen to offers for in January.

It is asserted that the La Liga club received ‘good offers’ for the experienced wing-back during the summer and that Premier League clubs are ‘very interested’ in the player, ‘especially Tottenham’.

Spurs Web Opinion

I was surprised that Tottenham decided to hang on to Emerson Royal in the summer, and I would be in favour of letting the Brazilian leave in January and replacing him with Carrasco, who would be a better fit for the wing-back role.

The Belgian has been poor so far this season but that might be down to some background issues at Atletico. However, my gut instinct is that Conte will want to hang on to Emerson until the end of the season and overhaul the right wing-back position next summer.
