Report: Spurs reportedly leading the race to sign £10m-rated full-back

Tottenham Hotspur have been installed as the front runners to land Middlesbrough right-back, Djed Spence, when the transfer market opens this summer.

Spence has become a regular in the starting eleven with the Championship outfit since breaking into the team in December (transfermarkt) and his performances have seemingly caught the attention of several Premier League sides.

The Evening Standard reported back in January that Tottenham were tracking the 19-year-old, who Jose Mourinho was said to be a fan of.

ESPN now reports that Spurs are prepared to approach Neil Warnock’s side for the young defender this summer.

The report claims that Mourinho has been a fan of the teenager since his days at the Fulham academy with the Spurs boss’ son, Jose Mourinho Jr, who is said to have given rave reports.

It is asserted that Middlesbrough will allow the youngster to leave this summer for around £10 million despite Spence signing a new deal back in February.

Spurs are reportedly facing competition from the likes of Brighton, West Ham, Burnley, Sheffield United, and Southampton for the defender, but it is the North Londoners who are mentioned as the most likely suitors for the Boro man.

Spurs Web Opinion

It is anybody’s guess at the moment who our main right-back targets are, with Spurs continuing to be linked with loads of players. While I believe Timothy Castagne would be the best fit for our system among the right-backs we have been linked with, our requirement in meeting the homegrown criteria might tempt the club to instead move for the likes of Aarons, Spence or Ferguson.
