Report: Spurs scouts impressed by French midfielder dubbed ‘the new Pogba’

According to Foot Mercato, Tottenham sent their scouts to watch Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare on Wednesday and were left mightily impressed by what they saw.

20-year-old Soumare, who came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain has impressed since moving to Lille back in 2017. The midfielder first caught people’s eye last season when he made 17 appearances for Lille in all competitions.

The youngster, whose skill on the ball and physical prowess has seen him being dubbed as the ‘new Paul Pogba’, has been even more impressive this season in the 15 appearances he has made so far.

The midfielder who stands at 6ft 2in tall was in action for France’s Under-20’s on Wednesday as they took on Argentina.

France overcame the South American’s 1-0 as Soumare ran the show in midfield with Spurs scouts in attendance.

Everton are also said to be watching the midfielder (Liverpool Echo), while Newcastle are reported to have bid for the Frenchman on deadline day but Lille refused the offer from the Magpies. (HITC)

The middle of midfield is one area in which Spurs certainly need reinforcements in after the sale of Mousa Dembele in January.

While Boubakary Soumare is one for the future rather than a ready-made replacement for the Belgian, it will be interesting to see if Spurs bid for the Lille man in the summer.
