Report: Spurs set sights on former Real Madrid manager

According to a report from Estadio Deportivo, Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui.

Tottenham appear to be on the cusp of reaching an agreement with Paulo Fonseca.

However, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold warned on Thursday that one should not take anything as 100% after what has already happened in the North London club’s managerial pursuit this month.

If Estadio Deportivo are to be believed, Spurs are indeed eyeing an alternative to Fonseca in the form of Lopetegui.

The former Real Madrid boss has led Sevilla to back-to-back fourth-place finishes and a Europa League title in his two seasons at the club.

The report states that the ‘shadow of Juande Ramos is there again’ around Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, as Tottenham once again come for Sevilla’s manager.

Spurs poached Ramos from the La Liga club in 2007 and the Spaniard made a bright start to his time at North London, leading the club to the League Cup just a few months into his reign.

However, Ramos’ stay at Tottenham turned out to be short-lived as he was sacked just eight games into his first full season at the club after a disastrous start which saw Spurs rooted to the bottom of the table with 2 points.

Estadio Deportivo suggest, however, that Sevilla are ‘not afraid that that departure will be repeated’ this time after Lopetegui recently renewed his contract until 2024.
