Report: Barcelona considering 24-year-old who Spurs are ‘very interested’ in signing

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be ‘very interested’ in pushing ahead with a deal to bring Ajax goalkeeper, Andre Onana, to North London, according to a report by Sport.

There has been considerable speculation over the last few months regarding the goalkeeping role at Spurs.

The Daily Mail suggested in February that the Onana was one of the options Tottenham were exploring as they seek to bring in a new goalkeeper to compete with Hugo Lloris.

Sport (as relayed by Sport Witness) have now claimed that Onana is an option Barcelona are considering but that they face competition from Spurs for the 24-year-old.

The Ajax goalkeeper, who spent five years at the Catalan club’s academy, is said to be open to the idea of returning to Barca, but the Lilywhites are also ‘probing’ a potential transfer.

It is suggested that Ajax know of the Cameroon international’s desire to leave the club this summer and that they value him at around €40 million. However, they are open to negotiation on that price.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Onana could be an excellent option to fill Hugo Lloris’ shoes in the long-term but I suspect he wouldn’t be too keen on coming to Spurs unless he was guaranteed first-team football straight away. I think we are likely to go for a less high-profile option like Nick Pope who wouldn’t necessarily mind playing second fiddle to Lloris for a season or two before taking over the reins.
