Report: Spurs set to begin long-term contract talks with defender

Jose Mourinho’s decision to throw Japhet Tanganga into the deep end for his Premier League debut against Liverpool certainly paid dividends.

The 20-year-old showed that he was not out of his depth with an assured performance well beyond his tender age which included a brilliant goal line clearance in the opening moments of the encounter in North London.

Mourinho kept faith with the academy product for Tuesday night’s FA Cup third round replay against Middlesbrough with the defender putting in a Man of the Match display despite being asked to play out of position at right back.

The Athletic have reported that Spurs have already taken the decision to extend Tanganga’s contract to the summer of 2021 and will shortly begin contract talks to tie the highly-rated youngster to a long-term deal.

With Jan Vertonghen out of contract at the end of the season, the emergence of Tanganga has acted as a timely boost.

Juan Foyth was given the opportunity by Mourinho to show what he can do at Norwich and once again showed that he still has improvements to make with his judgement after being caught in possession which led to the Canaries first goal in the 2-2 draw.
