Report: Spurs set to compete with Arsenal for PL defender

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are likely to face competition for the signature of Manchester City defender John Stones in the summer.

The report claims that City are set for a major defensive clearout in the summer with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Nicolas Otamendi and Stones tipped to be on their way out of the Etihad Stadium.

Both North London clubs have reportedly expressed in taking the England international, while Everton are also said to be keen on bringing Stones back to Goodison Park.

Spurs are rumoured to be in the market for multiple defensive additions when the transfer market reopens in the summer as Jose Mourinho looks to reshape his backline (the Express).

However, it is Arsenal who are said to be the frontrunners for Stones’ signature, with TEAMtalk claiming that Mikel Arteta’s relationship with the central defender potentially giving the Gunners the advantage.

City are said to want to recoup the £50million they paid Everton for his services in 2016.

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe our name has only been thrown into the mix for Stones because everybody knows we are in the market for defenders. I don’t believe that we are in for the City star as he certainly doesn’t fit the profile of centre-halves that Jose Mourinho likes. I also think he’s too error-prone and won’t help solve our defensive problems.
