Report: Spurs set to focus their efforts on £9m-rated central defender

According to a report from Bild (as translated by TBR Football), Tottenham Hotspur are set to focus their efforts on signing Freiburg defender Robin Koch in the coming weeks.

Koch has had an outstanding season at the back for the Bundesliga club this campaign and his performances have reportedly caught the attention of several sides, including Spurs.

Spurs were linked with a move for the centre-half during the January transfer window (Record via Sport Witness) and have been backed to make another attempt to sign him this summer (O Jogo).

Freiburg manager, Christian Streich, has admitted that the club may have to sell the 23-year-old this summer as they have taken a financial hit amidst the COVID-19 pandemic (Sky Sports in Germany via Fussball News).

Borussia Dortmund are also said to be interested in the versatile defender, who is reportedly available for around €10 million this summer (Bild via BuliNews).

Bild now reveal that Koch has refused to sign an extension with Freiburg and the Bundesliga club have decided to cash in on the German international, whose contract runs out in the summer of 2021.

The report reveals that Jose Mourinho is keen on signing a centre-half with Juan Foyth and Jan Vertonghen both expected to leave North London, and the club have identified Koch as the man to bring in.

Spurs Web Opinion

I have been watching Koch closely since we started to be linked with him in January and I have been left extremely impressed with his composure and maturity despite being so young. He is comfortable playing on the left-hand side of defence despite being right-footed and has a Toby-like ping that he often uses the switch play from the back.

The question mark about Koch is whether he will be able to handle the physicality and intensity of the Premier League, as he is not the most imposing, nor is he particularly dominant in the air. There is also a possibility that Jose might want him as a defensive midfielder, a position in which Koch has done quite well when asked to fill in.
