Report: Spurs set to make January bid for £20m-rated Championship star

According to The Sunday Mirror (03/10/21, p71), Tottenham Hotspur are set to make an offer for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone when the transfer window reopens in January.

Tottenham were linked with a move for Johnstone during the summer on the back of his impressive showing for the Baggies in the Premier League last season.

However, the North London club instead chose to bring in Pierluigi Gollini from Atalanta on an initial loan deal with an option to buy while Johnstone remained at the Hawthorns.

While Hugo Lloris has remained as Spurs’ first choice, the Italian has impressed when he has been handed opportunities in the Europa Conference League and the Carabao Cup.

However, if The Mirror’s latest update is to be believed, that may not stop Spurs from reigniting their interest in Johnstone in January.

The report claims that the North London club have scouted the England goalkeeper on several occasions and that the Baggies number one is keen on a swift return to the top flight.

However, it is asserted that West Brom could demand £20m for Johnstone in January despite the fact that the goalkeeper’s contract runs out at the end of the season.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not understand the logic of pursuing someone like Johnstone in January after landing Gollini this summer. Besides, the £20m asking price is extremely excessive for a player who could be available for free next summer. If Tottenham do pursue Johnstone, they will likely do so next summer instead of January.
