Report: Spurs set to miss out on talented youngster after improved contract offer

According to a report by Sky Sports, highly-rated Norwich City central defender Ben Godfrey is set to put pen to paper on a new deal with the club that will keep him at Carrow Road until 2024.

The report claims that Norwich wish to hang to the youngster as they get ready to compete in the Premier League next season, and have offered a five-year contract to Godfrey in an effort to fend off interest from the likes of Tottenham, Manchester United and Lyon.

The 21-year-old was one of the stars of the show last season as he made 36 appearances in all competitions and helped Norwich to the EFL Championship title.

The England under-20 international can play as either a central defender or a central midfielder, and it was reportedly his versatility that made him of prime interest to Tottenham (The Mirror).

The youngster was reported to be available for a fee in the region of £20m but his asking price will likely go up considerably if he signs the new contract.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Godfrey is no doubt a fantastic prospect, Tottenham are well stocked in central defence with the likes of Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez being able to cover for Alderwiereld and Vertonghen.

Given that Sanchez and Foyth have a lot of room for development, signing another young defensive prospect won’t make much financial sense for the club this summer.
