Report: Spurs set to step up interest in midfielder after Arsenal pull out of race

Tottenham Hotspur are set to step up their interest in Houssem Aouar after their North London rivals, Arsenal, pulled out of the race for the midfielder, according to The Daily Mirror.

Previous reports have indicated that Tottenham’s managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, is an admirer of Aouar, having tried to take the Lyon star to Juventus last summer.

The French international has just two years left to run on his contract at the Groupama Stadium and Lyon head coach, Peter Bosz has admitted the midfielder could depart before the end of the month.

Tottenham and Arsenal were alleged to be going head-to-head for Aouar’s signature this summer.

However, with the Gunners snapping up Martin Odegaard on a permanent transfer from Real Madrid, The Mirror now claim the door has been opened for Spurs to step up their interest in Aouar.

The report adds that the Lilywhites are one of several Premier League clubs who have shown an interest in the 23-year-old, with Lyon thought to be open to listening to offers for the player.

The fact that none of Europe’s big clubs have snapped up Aouar despite Lyon’s rumoured £21m valuation shows how far the 23-year-old’s stock has fallen over the last twelve months. I would be happy for Spurs to snap up the Frenchman as a squad option if we find a buyer for Harry Winks.
