Report: Spurs ‘sniffing around’ old transfer target for summer move

It has been well reported that Tottenham became the first ever Premier League side in history not to sign a new player over the course of an entire season this year.

However, that wasn’t through a lack of trying, as Tottenham made a couple of bids for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish towards the end of the summer transfer window (SkySports).

Villa turned down the Premier League club’s approaches, and Grealish ended up signing a new deal at the club until 2023.

However, that may not be the end of the saga as Championship expert and ex-player Noel Whelan claims Spurs have been sniffing around the England youngster.

The 23-year-old has had a superb season in the Championship this year, helping Villa win six consecutive league matches to propel them close to promotion.

Tottenham will be hoping Villa fail in their bid to achieve promotion, as it would increase their chances of signing Grealish.

Whelan said (Football Insider): “If they get promoted, he’ll stay at Villa. If they remain in the Championship, then yeah, I think he’s going to have to look elsewhere, maybe back to Tottenham who have already been sniffing around.

“He’s been loyal enough, he could have gone probably at the end of the (last) season, signed a new contract, but I can’t see how you can hold onto a talent like that if you’re staying in the Championship – someone who’s young, English and he wants to be playing at the top level, testing himself week in, week out.”
