Report: Spurs star could be recalled to national squad after almost two years

The Daily Mail have claimed that Tottenham centre-back Eric Dier could be recalled to the England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures this month.

Dier has 45 caps for England but the Spurs star’s last appearance for the Three Lions came in a 4-0 win over Iceland back in November 2020.

The centre-back has been in exemplary form since the start of last season and has been ever-present in the centre of Antonio Conte’s back three since the Italian arrived in North London.

Some eyebrows were raised when Dier was left out of the 27-man squad for England’s Nations League fixtures back in May. However, The Mail assert that the 28-year-old is very much in Southgate’s thinking ahead of the international break this month.

The report claims that the England boss has been impressed by Dier’s early season form and the Tottenham man could thus be back in the squad after a long absence.

England face Italy on September 23 before hosting Germany three days later, in what will be the final two matches before the World Cup.

Southgate will name his squad for the Nations League fixtures on September 15 and the 26-man squad for the World Cup will have to be named by November 13, with the tournament starting a week later.

Spurs Web Opinion

There is no doubt that Dier fully deserves to be recalled to the squad, and the fact that Southgate sometimes plays a back three, makes his inclusion a no-brainer.

I never understood how the likes of Mings and Coady were picked ahead of the Tottenham man. The 29-year-old’s experience in tournament football will also make him an asset for the England side.
