Report: Spurs star may be planning on leaving the club for free next summer

Tottenham Hotspur have not signed a new player in over 16 months, but they will surely look to invest in the transfer window this summer.

However, it is also vitally important that Spurs hang on to their best first team players if they are to grow next season.

Toby Alderweireld enters the final year of his contract in the new season, with Spurs extending the deal by one year in early 2019. However, this activated a clause that could see him leave this summer for just £25m (Guardian).

The Belgian implied in a recent interview that he planned to see his contract out with Spurs (Daily Mail), however, it is unknown whether he will sign a new one, or another extension.

The Daily Mail now report that they suspect Alderweireld will leave on a free in the summer of 2020, with the 30-year-old still a key part of the Spurs back line.

The former Ajax man surely has a few years still left in him, and Spurs fans will be hoping he signs on for longer than one more season.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I would offer Alderweireld a new two-year deal through next season, as 30 is nowhere near the end of a defender’s career anymore. Toby still has years at the top left in him, and I would hate to see him move to a rival on a free.
