Tottenham Hotspur entered this season with a number of players in the final year of their respective contracts, including Toby Alderweireld, Christian Eriksen, and Jan Vertonghen.
Alderweireld signed a new three-year deal after Jose Mourinho came through the door as the new Spurs head coach.
Christian Eriksen secured a January move to Inter Milan as a new contract looked unlikely between the Dane and Tottenham.
However, Jan Vertonghen’s situation at the club remains unresolved. With just a few months left on his current deal, Vertonghen is currently set to leave Tottenham on a free in the summer.
The Daily Mail have now reported exactly that, stating that the Belgian defender will not be handed a new contract between now and the end of the season.
While Tottenham would not be able to cash in on the defender in terms of a transfer fee, they would be able to shed his £100k-per-week wages from the bill (Spotrac).
Spurs Web Opinion:
As much as I love Vertonghen, the time has come for him to move on. I would love to see him move back to Ajax on a free and complete his footballing journey there. The man deserves nothing but thanks and respect from Spurs fans.
