Report: Spurs star ready to start negotiations over a new contract

The fact that Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, and Christian Eriksen will all be free agents at the end of the season has been covered exhaustively by the press in the past few months.

Belgian publication DH have claimed that Alderweireld is ready to begin negotiations over a new contract after the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

It is claimed that the 30-year-old is confident he will be an important player under the Portuguese manager and is ready to commit his future to the club.

It is suggested that the reason talks had previously broken down with Alderweireld were down to the club not being prepared to meet the defender’s wage demands.

However, the report claims that the relationship between Alderweireld’s agent and Daniel Levy remains good despite a failure to come to an agreement on a new contract to date.

Meanwhile, Het Belang van Limburg reported recently that Jan Vertonghen is also ready to put pen to paper on a new deal with Tottenham.

If Alderweireld does extend his contract with the club, then it would indicate that his hesitation at putting pen to paper on a new deal had a lot to do with Pochettino. That is unless Levy has suddenly decided to accept Alderweireld’s inflated wage demands which is unlikely given the defender’s age.
