Report: Spurs star reluctant to sign new deal which could force Levy to sell

Rewind to the 2016/2017 season and Eric Dier was arguably one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most consistent performers in helping the club go unbeaten at White Hart Lane for the first time in 52 years (Goal).

Since then the England midfielder has suffered some challenging times in North London after battling with both illness and injury.

The 26-year-old admitted in an interview with The Guardian in November that his immune system has struggled with the medicine he was prescribed after having his appendix removed which left his body run down.

He fell behind the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and even Oliver Skipp at times during the latter stages of Mauricio Pochettino’s time at the club.

The arrival of Jose Mourinho has seen the former Sporting Lisbon player come somewhat back into favour under the Portuguese, but he has still struggled to rediscover his old form which made him a fan favourite among the North London faithful (transfermarkt).

The Daily Mail claim that Dier is reluctant to sign a new contract at the club and firstly wants assurances over his position in the squad.

His contract expires in the summer of 2021 and Daniel Levy is reluctant to let another player enter the final year of their deal after being forced to sell Christian Eriksen last month for £16.9million to Inter Milan rather than have seen him walk away as a free agent at the end of the current campaign (BBC).

The report suggests that Spurs will look to offload Dier, who has made 166 Premier League appearances during his time at the club.

Dier is said to see his future as a central defender rather than a holding midfielder and is also frustrated at the prospect of being left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad Euro 2020.
