Report: Spurs star sent home from international duty due to fitness issue

Steven Bergwijn has reportedly been sent home from international duty with the Netherlands due to fitness issues.

The official Dutch national website featured a statement in which it claimed that the Tottenham Hotspur player was assessed after reporting international duty but it was deemed that he was not fit enough to feature in the matches against Spain, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Poland.

Dutch boss Frank de Boer has opted against calling up a replacement to take the place of the 23-year-old, who is now expected to head back to North London and resume training with the rest of Jose Mourinho’s squad.

Bergwijn has struggled to hold down a place in the Spurs side this season having only started one of Tottenham’s eight Premier League matches to date and has not even made the match day squad for four of those fixtures, including the previous three (transfermarkt).

The former PSV man has stiff competition at Tottenham which includes Gareth Bale, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela.
