Report: Spurs star ‘waited and waited’ to join Champions League club last summer

Mundo Deportivo have revealed that Atletico Madrid came close to signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer and that the La Liga club are expected to try again for the Tottenham man during the upcoming transfer window.

The report says that Atletico have already started plotting their summer transfer plans, with the Spanish giants said to be keen to strengthen in midfield.

One of the names on their radar is that of Hojbjerg, who was also on the club’s wishlist a year ago.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg really wanted Atletico Madrid move

The outlet says that Diego Simeone insisted to the Atletico hierarchy last summer that they should sign the Tottenham player and the two clubs held talks over a deal.

It is claimed that the 28-year-old ‘waited and waited’ to leave Hotspur Way and for the two sides to reach an agreement, but that never happened.

It is suggested Los Rojiblancos could put that right by swooping for Hojbjerg this summer, with Spurs said to value the Denmark international at €15m (£13m), which is well within the La Liga side’s budget.

By the sounds of it, the same clubs who explored deals for Hojbjerg last summer, Atletico, Juventus, and Napoli, are set to fight it out for the midfielder’s signature this summer as well. I can see the Dane being quite keen on the idea of working with Simeone.
