Report: Spurs star’s international teammate recommends club sign him this summer

Napoli have reportedly entered the race for Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen, according to the latest reports coming out of Italy.

Vertonghen will be a free agent in the summer and there is no indication so far that he is close to agreeing on a contract extension with the club.

The Belgium international has already been tipped to leave Tottenham in the summer with a return to Ajax (De Telegraaf) as well as a move to Inter Milan (Evening Standard) being rumoured.

It turns out that Napoli too are keeping an eye on the defender’s situation and could make an offer to him at the end of the season.

Italian journalist Cosimo Silva told Area Napoli that Napoli have identified the Spurs star as the man to replace Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, with the Senegalese international expected to complete a move to either the Premier League or Paris Saint-Germain.

He also revealed that it was Vertonghen’s international teammate Dries Mertens who recommended that the Seria A club sign the 32-year-old.

Silva told Area Napoli (as translated and relayed by Sport Witness), “The Senegalese could stay, but an offer that cannot be refused could make De Laurentiis wobble and therefore turn to Vertonghen on a free transfer, who has been sponsored by Mertens.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Vertonghen does look like he is desperate to stay and prove to the coaching staff and the club that he is still good enough for this level. His celebration after the goal against Norwich showed how much it meant to him. I wouldn’t rule out his chances of remaining at Spurs next season just yet.
