Report: Spurs ‘stepping up their attempts’ to sign 23-year-old

Tottenham Hotspur are ‘stepping up their attempts; to sign Atalanta central defender Cristian Romero, according to The Telegraph.

The report claims that the 23-year-old is Tottenham’s top defensive target ahead of the new season which begins with the visit of Premier League champions Manchester City to North London on August 15th.

Romero is still contracted to Juventus with Fabio Paratci having overseen the deal which took him to the Old Lady, however, the Argentine is halfway through a two-year loan deal at Atalanta with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The Italian outfit would make a healthy profit on his departure with Spurs said to be in talks over a deal that would see them pay a fee in excess of £40million to secure his signature, if talks prove to be fruitful over the next few days.

Having removed Erik Lamela’s salary of around £80,000-a-week (Spotrac) and the expected sale of Toby Alderweireld to Al-Duhail in Qatar for a fee in the region of £13million, hopefully, this will raise significant funds towards the acquisition of Romero.

Despite being just 23, Romero has proven last season that he is a defender capable of playing week in, week out in a top European league having been named Serie A defender of the year.
