Report: Spurs still hold hope that star will sign a contract extension

Mauricio Pochettino’s side needed to work hard to overcome newly promoted Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the new season at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, with all of Spurs’ three goals coming in the final 15 minutes of the encounter.

One man who was crucial to turning the game around was Christian Eriksen, the 27-year-old came on as a substitute when the lilywhites were 1-0 down and helped to turn the tide of the game.

The Dane’s showing against Villa has left many Spurs fans hoping that the midfielder, who is into the final year of his contract, stays for at least another season.

According to a report in The Times, Spurs have not given up the hope of getting the former Ajax playmaker to sign a new deal at the club.

The report claims that the club are willing to offer Eriksen significantly more than the £90,000 a week he is currently earning but it is suggested that he is unlikely to put pen to paper on the offer.

Having seen how Tottenham and Daniel Levy operate, it is very unlikely that they are going to risk losing Eriksen for free and so he will probably leave before the transfer window closes. If he does stay, however, if he is to perform as he did against Villa, then his commitment to the cause certainly can’t be questioned.
