Report: Spurs still waiting on defender for contract decision

Tottenham Hotspur are still waiting for a decision from Jan Verotnghen on whether he wants to sign an extension until the end of the season or leave at the end of the month, Sky Sports have revealed.

There has been speculation over the 33-year-old’s future over the past few days with reports suggesting that he is set to leave Spurs this summer after eight seasons at the club (Football Insider).

The question now seems to be whether the centre-half will complete the season in North London or leave after his current deal expires on June 30.

Sky Sports claim that the Belgian international is weighing up the risks of being involved in the final nine games of the season.

The Premier League has set a deadline of June 23rd for clubs and players to agree extensions beyond the end of the month.

If he does not sign an extension, the former Ajax man will only be able to feature in the clashes against Manchester United and West Ham United before leaving the club.

Spurs Web Opinion

It would be understandable if Vertonghen decides that the risk will be too big to take as he would not want to jeopardise what could be his last big contract this summer. However, I expect the defender to see out the season with us before leaving. With games coming thick and fast and with five substitutions being allowed per match, we could certainly use him for the final nine games.
