Report: Spurs suffer injury blow with in-form player set to miss rest of the season

Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty is set to miss the remainder of the Premier League season, according to Football.London.

Antonio Conte kept faith with the Republic of Ireland international at left wing-back for the clash against Aston Villa yesterday afternoon, having impressed in the role the weekend prior in the win over Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In the thirteenth minute of the match at Villa Park, Doherty was on the receiving end of a nasty challenge by Matty Cash near the touchline which left the Spurs man in a heap on the floor, while the Villa player surprisingly evaded any action from match day officials.

The 30-year-old tried to continue until the twentieth minute but was unable to recover and had to be replaced by Sergio Reguilon.

Doherty was spotted wearing a brace on his right knee as he was leaving the stadium and the report claims that he underwent scans earlier today which have confirmed he has ruptured his medial collateral ligament in his knee and will be sidelined for up to 12 weeks.

No decision has been made on whether surgery is required with Doherty’s involvement in the Republic of Ireland’s four UEFA Nations League fixtures scheduled for June also looking unlikely.

This comes as a massive blow to Tottenham’s hopes of a top four finish such was the marked improvement Doherty has shown since February when he scored away at Leeds United. His confidence had grown which was clear to see and had even become a key creator in the final third of the pitch.
