Report: Spurs suffer potential blow in their pursuit of 22-year-old right-back

The Evening Standard have revealed that West Ham United have taken up an option to extend Ben Johnson’s contract in order to ensure the likes of Tottenham do not get their hands on the right-back.

Tottenham failed to sign a right wing-back during the January transfer window, with the club’s number one target, Adama Traore, snubbing the North Londoners’ approach in favour of a return to Barcelona (The Athletic).

That is a position that Spurs are expected to prioritise strengthening in the summer, with the like of Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey (Standard) and Nottingham Forests’ Djed Spence (90 min) thought to be on Spurs’ radar.

The Evening Standard have now revealed that Antonio Conte’s men were also following the progress of Johnson, who has impressed since breaking into the West Ham first-team.

It is revealed that Arsenal and Liverpool also hold an interest in the Hammers youth academy graduate.

However, David Moyes’ side are said to have taken up the option to extend the defender’s contract until 2024 in order to keep him out of the clutches of their Premier League rivals.

Lamptey would be my preferred target to replace Emerson Royal at right wing-back. However, who we go for in the summer could depend on many factors, including Conte’s future.

If the Italian leaves the club, we might be in the market for a traditional right-back than a wing-back, which would mean that we might go after a player with a different profile.
