Tottenham may have received a boost in their efforts to sign Thomas Meunier with the Belgian international said to be attracted by the prospect of moving to London and playing for Jose Mourinho, according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol.
While Spurs have been linked with a number of right-backs over the past few weeks including the likes of Max Aarons (Football Insider) and Nelson Semedo (Don Balon), with Meunier having also been mentioned in dispatches.
ESPN revealed that Jose Mourinho had personally called the 28-year-old in order to convince him to come to Spurs, with the defender being left flattered by the call.
When asked in a Q and A about the future of Meunier, Solhekol revealed that while many clubs were vying for the PSG star’s signature, Spurs could hold an advantage due to the defender being open to moving to London and playing for the Portuguese.
Solhekol told Sky Sports: “Spurs need another right back and Thomas Meunier would be a great addition to their squad.
“He is out of contract at PSG at the end of June and he will be one of the most sought-after players during the summer.
“The only problem for Spurs is lots of other clubs want the Belgium international. Having said that, Meunier is attracted by the prospect of playing in London for Jose Mourinho and if he’s offered the right terms, we could well see him playing for Spurs next season.
“Signing Meunier would make sense for Spurs. There’s no transfer fee, he’s 28 and he plays for regularly for Belgium – the No. 1 ranked national team in the world.”

In a financially uncertain climate like this, all clubs are likely to go after free agents. So, we are going to face a lot of competition for the likes of Willian, Fraser, and Meunier. However, having Mourinho in charge will be a great advantage to us not only owing to his relationships but due to his ability to convince players to play for him. Hopefully, he can get on the phone and work his magic on our targets.
