Report: Spurs turn attention to Everton midfielder who ‘ticks a lot of boxes’

In their continued search for a new midfielder, Tottenham Hotspur are now looking at Everton’s James Garner, but they will face competition from Newcastle United if they want to sign the 22-year-old.

For months now, it has been claimed that Spurs are keen to bring in a new midfielder, with Ange Postecoglou eager to upgrade his options in the middle of the park, particularly in the number 8 role (Independent).

All signs have pointed towards the Lilywhites attempting a swoop for Chelsea star, Conor Gallagher, with a firm approach expected in the summer, when the 23-year-old will be into the final year of his contract with the Blues (Telegraph).

However, more recently, it has emerged that Spurs may have identified an alternative to Gallagher, in the form of Everton’s James Garner (TeamTalk).

The 22-year-old has two goals and one assist in 31 appearances for the Toffees this season and has been ever-present in Sean Dyche’s side for the last 14 games (Transfermarkt).

James Garner could be perfect for Spurs

Now, according to sources at Football Insider, both Tottenham and Newcastle United are “keeping tabs” on the Everton man with a view to making a move in the summer.

Apparently, Garner “ticks a lot of boxes” for both clubs. It is believed the Premier League sides are looking for players under the age of 24 who have the “potential” to perform in the Champions League.

The “versatile” Garner is looking like an attractive prospect, given he has played on the flanks, in a holding role, and in a more dynamic, box-to-box role for Everton this season. It is expected Everton would struggle to keep players like Garner if they are relegated this year.

I still prefer Gallagher, but Garner has been very impressive for Everton. He works hard, is able to do the defensive stuff as well as getting forward and opening up play, and he would obviously offer the homegrown status we are looking for, too.
