Report: Spurs want Spain international as Hugo Lloris’ long-term replacement

Marca have claimed that Tottenham want Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon to be the successor to Hugo Lloris.

Lloris has been in fine form over the last couple of years for the Lilywhites and it did not come as a surprise when it was announced last month he had signed a contract extension with the club until 2024.

However, in the last couple of weeks, the Frenchman has been guilty of some unforced errors, failing to cover himself in glory in either of Wolves’ two goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last week and parrying the ball straight into Ilkay Gundogan’s path for Manchester City’s opener in Spurs’ 3-2 win at the Etihad on Saturday.

Marca have now claimed that Antonio Conte’s men are already on the lookout for Lloris’ long-term successor and have set their sights on Simon, who has impressed for Athletic and for Spain over the last couple of years.

It is explained that Tottenham want to snap up the 24-year-old shot-stopper despite Lloris signing a new contract so that there can be a smooth transition between the two.

With Simon having established himself as Spain’s number one, I do not see why he would be open to serving as Lloris’ understudy for a season or two. I believe that the Athletic star would want a guarantee that he would be the number one before giving a green light to any transfer.
