Report: Spurs want to sign 18-year-old Chelsea defender this summer

Miguel Delaney has revealed in The Independent’s Reading the Game newsletter (10/5/24) that Tottenham Hotspur are one of a whole host of clubs who are eyeing a move for Chelsea academy sensation Josh Acheampong.

Acheampong has been turning a lot of heads with his performance in the Under-18 Premier League this season and he was handed his senior debut by Mauricio Pochettino in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Spurs earlier this month.

The 18-year-old, who can operate as a centre-back or a right-back, is thought to have emerged as a target for many clubs across Europe.

Tottenham and Newcastle both like Josh Acheampong

Delaney claims that both Tottenham and Newcastle are now considering moves for the teenager while three of this season’s Champions League quarterfinalists have also expressed an interest in the player.

The journalist explains that while Acheampong is thought of quite highly at Stamford Bridge, the club’s financial pressures mean they will have to consider parting ways with him this summer.

Delaney points out that the fee that the Blues will receive for their academy graduate will go down as pure profit in their books and would thus be a big boost in the club’s quest to ensure they comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Tottenham might have an advantage over the other clubs in the race for Acheampong as they would offer the youngster an oppurtunity to remain in London. Postecoglou has also shown a willingness to trust younger players, which might sway the 18-year-old.
