Report: Spurs want to sign experienced defender with 639 club games under his belt

Tottenham Hotspur could lose one of their most experienced central defenders at the end of this season, with Jan Vertonghen having just a few months left on his contract.

The Belgian defender can already talk to non-English clubs about a pre-contract agreement and will leave on a free unless Spurs choose to offer him a renewal.

Jose Mourinho has the likes of Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga, and Juan Foyth at his disposal in North London.

However, Vertonghen and Alderweireld are arguably the only two currently at the club who have a wealth of first-team and big-game experience over a number of years.

The Mirror have now reported that Tottenham have entered the race to sign experienced defender, Diego Godin, from Inter Milan in the summer. Manchester United are also said to be interested.

The Daily Mail claim that Godin has struggled to fit in at Inter and the 34-year-old could be available for a transfer in the summer.

Godin has played a total of 639 career club games, as well as 135 for Uruguay, and boasts numerous major titles from his time at Atletico Madrid (Wikipedia).
