Report: Spurs want to tie 26-year-old to new contract but he has one key demand

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on tying Eric Dier down to a new contract in North London, although they have been unable to agree terms as of yet.

Dier’s current deal with the Lilywhites is set to run out next summer, meaning he would enter the 2020/21 season in the final year of his contract.

The Daily Star say that Spurs want to get a new deal signed, but Dier is making one key demand before he puts pen to paper. It is said that the England man wants to be assured that he will be treated as a central defender rather than a midfielder from now on.

The player recently came out in an interview and claimed that he preferred playing a defensive role (Evening Standard). Jose Mourinho has also fielded him as a centre-back on multiple occasions this year (WhoScored).

This comes after the 26-year-old has played predominantly as a holding midfielder for Spurs and England over the past three years.
