Report: Spurs wanted striker this summer – Paratici decided against hijacking deal

The Telegraph have reported that Tottenham Hotspur actually wanted to sign Danny Ings in the summer transfer market this year and could have made an offer.

However, Fabio Paratici apparently decided against an attempt to hijack Ings’ move to Aston Villa due to the transfer fee and wages involved.

Instead, the managing director of football chose to focus his funds on the back line, with understudy goalkeeper, Pierluigi Gollini, central defender, Cristian Romero, and Barcelona right-back, Emerson Royal all coming into North London.

Aston Villa reportedly paid around £30m for Ings this summer and put him on wages of £120,000 per week, something Spurs did not want to compete with.

This would have amounted to £6.25m per year in wages, plus the transfer fee, for a rather injury-prone 29-year-old. Villa eventually signed him rather under the radar and unopposed.

Meanwhile, Spurs failed to sign any kind of backup or competition for Harry Kane up front, with Carlos Vinicius and Gareth Bale heading back to their parent clubs.

Spurs Web Opinion:

I really wanted Ings, but I also thought we could get him for £20-£25m. Paying £30m plus a hefty chunk of wages on an ageing and injury-prone striker would not have been a great move. However, Spurs should have signed someone.
