Report: Spurs weigh up move for player Chelsea failed to sign for £40million

Tottenham Hotspur are currently mulling over whether to reignite their interest in Everton winger Anthony Gordon in the January transfer window, according to The Sun.

Spurs are already said to have made early enquiries for the 21-year-old over a potential move to north London, with Antonio Conte’s side having been keen on Gordon during the summer, while Chelsea had a £40million offer rejected.

Everton boss Frank Lampard is reported to be a huge admirer of the academy graduate, who is out of contract on Merseyside in the summer of 2025 (transfermarkt) and is yet to put pen to paper on fresh terms despite talks having taken place.

The Toffees are concerned that Gordon may have been distracted following the interest shown in him during the summer and are keen to tie him down for the long term.

Tottenham’s hopes of landing Gordon may have been made easier with Chelsea claimed not to be showing the same level of appetite in the England Under-21 international following the arrival of new manager Graham Potter and are not thought to be keen to make another approach this winter.

Everton, having buffed a £40million bid ahead of the season are said to want around £60million if they are to sanction his exit – a similar fee as to what Spurs paid to land Richarlison.

Gordon is a bright talent and his status as a homegrown player adds further appeal, however, whether Spurs would be prepared to spend £60million in January could depend on the injury situation at the club by the time the window opens.

Everton’s season continues to stall having lost at home to Leicester yesterday and a player of Gordon’s potential is likely to want to set his sights higher in the coming seasons, but with his contract running until 2025, the Toffees hold all of the power when it comes to the transfer fee.
