Report: Spurs will activate option to extend player’s contract until 2026

According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur will activate the option to extend Son Heung-min’s current contract by another year.

Son is an indispensable part of the Ange Postecoglou project at Tottenham, being appointed club captain by the Australian when he arrived through the door last summer.

The South Korean has made it quite clear that he is fully committed to the project, reiterating to ESPN two weeks ago that he expects Spurs to be a much stronger outfit next season and insisting that he and his teammates have full belief in Postecoglou’s methods.

While there is no indication that Son is on his way out this summer, the forward only has a year left on his current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham set to trigger Heung-min Son contract extension

The Athletic say that Spurs will now trigger the one-year option to extend their captain’s deal until 2026, which means that the deal would expire a week before the player’s 34th birthday.

Meanwhile, it has also been reported by several outlets over the last few months that Tottenham also intend to offer Son a new long-term deal sooner rather than later and that the club are confident of striking an agreement with the former Bayer Leverkusen man (Football Insider).

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have likely decided to activate the extension so that they enter into negotiations over a new deal with Son’s entourage in a slightly stronger position. I fully expect the 31-year-old to put pen to paper on a new long-term deal this summer.
