Report: Spurs will have to pay midfielder’s £72m release clause to sign him this year

Last month, we relayed a report from Portuguese publication Record that claimed Tottenham Hotspur were set to enter the race for Porto winger Luiz Diaz.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic first season in Portuguese football since his move from Colombian side Atletico Junior last summer, having registered 14 goals and seven assists in all competitions (transfermarkt.com).

It was claimed that Jose Mourinho is a fan of the wide man and is keen on bringing him to Spurs.

However, O Jogo (as relayed by Sport Witness) have now revealed that Porto have no intention of letting Diaz leave. It is claimed that the club believe the winger can build on his impressive first season and become even better in the future.

The report asserts that Spurs have not made an offer for the youngster yet but that any offer from the Lilywhites will be turned down.

It is said that Mourinho’s men would have to pay the winger’s €80million (£72m) release clause if they wish to sign him this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

Based on reports, it does seem like Jose wants to sign another wide player this summer, despite our capture of Bergwijn in January. It suggests that he plans on playing something similar to a 4-3-3 more often next season. It also potentially points to the fact that the Spurs boss does not see Sessegnon as a winger.
